Another major exposure moment for Enschede in 2017: the semifinal and final game of UEFA Women’s Euro, the European championship for women’s soccer, took place in Enschede. The city was preparing for these important games already from April onwards: a large banner was hanging on the balcony of city hall and also the rest of the city center was dressed up with flags from participating countries.
On the third of August, a glorious moment took place: the Oranje Leeuwinnen (Orange Lionesses, the Dutch women’s team), many of whom were trained at FC Twente, came to Enschede and won the semifinal against England in a stadium that was fully sold out. In the city center, thousands of people followed the game at the fan zone.
The ‘Orange party’ continued on the sixth of August, the Dutch team wrote history in the final against Denmark. After 90 intense minutes the ultimate reward followed: the Dutch women’s team won the European championship!
Through the championship, Enschede as UEFA hosty city profiled itself on an European scale as an international and professional soccer city.
